The regional director of American Airlines (AA), Antonio
Guerrero Sanchez, made the official announcement that flights between Cozumel
and Miami, Florida will resume starting November 21. This new route to Miami
will use a Boeing 373-800 type plane, an aircraft of the latest technology
and capacity of 166 passengers. The representative of American
Airlines stated he has confidence in Cozumel and has decided to increase its
presence in the tourist destination agreement in "good will".
Mr. Sanchez confirmed more flights during the winter season
with the start of flights between Cancun and Chicago, Illinois, and two flights
daily between Cancun and Dallas, Texas. Currently there are only five flights
per week between Cancun and Dallas, Texas.
Juan Carlos González Hernández, head of the State Department of
Tourism (Sedetur), stated he is looking into a direct route between Los
Angeles, California, and Cozumel. However, details of the start date of this
operation is yet unknown.
Another of the announcements made was the decision to open a new
route in the winter to Cozumel from Chicago, Illinois and an increase of five
more flights from Dallas. He cited that with the increase of flights, up to 750
more passengers will arrive on Saturdays to the benefit the local economy.
Gonzalez Hernandez said a $ 1.5 million investment in 2014 by
the Tourism Board, the private sector, and State and Municipal government for
an advertising campaign will re-position Cozumel in the tourism arena and
attract tourism from the states of the new routes.
